Spin

Biography

Spin (1999-present): a Metalcore band from Birkirkara, Malta.

I

n 1999 Spin was formed by friends Martin Ciappara (drums) and Simon Deguara (vocals). Over the first 3 months they wrote and recorded a demo CD entitled Pead; it was a low budget, low quality production. Shortly later they recruited Richard Gatt and William Cauchi for guitar but over time Gatt migrated to bass with Eric Mangion (a.k.a. Spank) joining shortly later to handle samplings and Josef Bajada (ex-Enshroud) taking up the rest of the guitars.

Cauchi's tenure was short lived, for after recording the promotional single Y? he would leave for musical differences and not be immediately replaced. In December 2001 they completed their recording sessions and in March 2002 released their Cell 46 opus, the title track of which appearing on an EP compilation along with the likes of Vital Remains, The Kovenant, The Gathering and Lamb of God. In September of that same year Gatt left and was replaced by Andre Spiteri (ex-Phantom Lord).

2003 and early 2004 were difficult times for the band. Both Ciappara and founding member Mangion left due to personal reasons. Marihole drummer Mark Zammit replaced Ciappara soon after his departure, to make the band a four-piece for the release of Spin (2005) EP. The act would split to reform as Core Frequency.

Footnote: Not to be confused with the American power/pop band with the same name.
