Dag Nasty

Biography

Dag Nasty (1985-1986, 1987-1988, 1992, 2002, 2012, 2015-present): a Emo band from Washington D.C., USA.

A

merican punk rock band Dag Nasty, hailing from Washington D.C., enjoyed by the emo community for their introspective and personal lyrics. The band formed in 1985 by ex-Minor Threat member Brian Baker (guitar), Colin Sears (drums; ex-Bloody Mannequin), Roger Marbury (bass; ex-Bloody Mannequin) and vocalist Shawn Brown (later of Swiz and Jesuseater). Their style of less aggressive, melodic hardcore punk rock style was influential to post-hardcore, specifically emo. Brian Baker has been quoted in Filmage, a documentary about the Descendents, that he started Dag Nasty as a direct inspiration from the Descendents, a band Dag Nasty would later tour with.

Can I Say (1986), Wig Out at Denko's (1987) and the All Ages Show 7" single (1987) would follow.

1988's Field Day was probably their most ambitious album, an album that generated polarised appraisals from fans. Field Day attempted to blend pop melodies with hardcore and metal riffs, further than previously attempted on Wig Out. The result helped to usher in a new style of hardcore featuring more controlled playing, guitar effects, acoustic elements and slower tempos. The band split up shortly after the supporting tour, however.

In 1992, Dag Nasty reformed with Dave Smalley on vocals to release the compilation 85-86, a collection of early, pre-Can I Say recordings, as well as the album Four on the Floor.

In 2002 the band would reform again to return to a more traditional hardcore sound for the album Minority of One. This would be the last full-time project for the members for they split up to various parts of the USA, getting together for various reunion tours or shows, relegating Dag Nasty to a part time offering, managing to band out an occasional record like Dag with Shawn (2010).

Can I Say and Wig Out at Denko's were remastered and separately re-released by 'Dischord' in 2002.

The single Cold Heart would follow in 2016.
