Brand New

Biography

Brand New (2000-2018): a Emo band from Long Island, New York, USA.

A

merican post-punk/emo band Brand New formed in 2000 under the membership of Vincent Accardi (lead guitar/vocals), Jesse Lacey (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Brian Lane (drums/percussion) and Garrett Tierney (bass/backing vocals) with Derrick Sherman (keyboards/guitars/backing vocals) between 2005-2013. During their tenure, the band became recognized as one of the most influential within the 2000s emo scene, celebrated for making artistic statements with their music. All four original members had backgrounds linking into their local Long Island independent and hardcore music scenes, enhanced with influences from an array of artists ranging from Buddy Rich to the Archers of Loaf.

During the late 1990s in Levittown, New York, Lacey, Tierney and Lane were all members of the band the Rookie Lot. They eventually split off from the other members of the group, and in 2000 formed Brand New. The band signed to 'Triple Crown Records' and their debut studio album, Your Favorite Weapon (2001). Their second album, Deja Entendu (2003) marked a stylistic change for the band that received an extremely positive critical reception and eventually was certified gold in the United States.

Brand New then moved to 'Interscope Records' and released the critically acclaimed The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me (2006). Jesus Christ, a single taken from the album, became their highest charting single in the US, peaking at number 30 on the Alternative Songs chart. In March 2008, the band started their own record label, 'Procrastinate! Music Traitors'. Their fourth album, Daisy (2009), became their highest charting album in the US at the time by reaching number six on the Billboard 200.

Their fifth and final album, Science Fiction (2017), became their first number-one album on the Billboard 200.

Despite being on the rise, Brand New saw a massively quick demise. On September 13, 2017, Kevin Devine announced via Facebook that he would be taking time off of his own project, Kevin Devine and the Goddamn Band, to join Brand New on their Science Fiction tour as an additional guitarist and vocalist. Nada Surf, a band Lacey has professed himself a fan of, served as the opening act for the tour. During a performance in October 2017, Lacey further confirmed the band's end, stating "We're gonna be a band for about 14 more months, so thank you so much for being here tonight".

The prediction of 14 months was not fully realized for in late 2017, Lacey was accused of sexual misconduct occurring during the early and mid-2000s. He issued a public apology that prompted Devine and supporting act Martha to pull out of the upcoming European tour dates. The band later announced the postponement of all of their upcoming tour dates and, aside from a few unpublicized meetings at guitarist Accardi's home and at a Texas studio, they remained publicly inactive. In 2018, following t-shirt designs and lyric books which suggested that possibility, Brand New split. Despite the split, On December 31, 2018, a track rumored to be titled Simple Man was leaked onto the internet.
