B

ritish act Solstice played classic doom metal by being heavy without sounding dreary and featuring clear NWOBHM-inspired vocals. The band was more known for the membership which included (in its early days) Cradle Of Filth guitarist Gian Pyres performing under the similar name of John Piras, Anathema and My Dying Bride drummer Shaun Steels, future Cannibal Corpse guitarist Rob Barrett, Obituary, Cancer and Testament guitarist James Murphy, Malevolent Creation drummerAlex Marquez and founding guitarist member Rich Walker who was also founder of the 'Miskatonic Foundation' record label. Lamentations (1994), Halcyon EP (1995), and New Dark Age (1998) were released before their retirement was announced in April 2002. New Dark Age was the album that got them notice, especially for the opening track, The Sleeping Tyrant. Walker would leave to concentrate on his business endeavors while the other members went off to explore other types of Metal music.

Footnote: All the members of this band are not listed here due to my inability to find a complete listing.

Insofar as not finding sufficient listings is concerned, there appears to be a second UK band by the same name whose official website offered little insight either. Do not confuse the act discussed above with this other UK band Solstice that plays a melodic neo prog. music, with some jazz and folk elements, including violin and flutes and vocals very similar to Jon Anderson's Yes. The UK Band was formed in 1980 and after first work in 1984's Silent Dance, they were financially broke, but they somehow returned in 1993 with a new album called New Life, with a sound that reminds one of bands like Renaissance or La Tulipe Noire. Three years later (with change of line-up) the band released their last album until now titled, Circles, with a similar sound to the previous but with a better production. As a curiosity, in 1998, a 2CD compilation Pathways was released, including songs from the two first albums (Silent Dance/New Life), with bonus tracks and a different running track list from the original albums.
