ilverstein formed in 2000 as a post-hardcore band from Burlington, Ontario, Canada. Their band name came from a reference to the famous children's author Shel Silverstein, whom the band had admired and read the stories of as children. So far, they have released eight studio albums, three EPs, a compilation album and a live DVD/CD. Their lineup remained unchanged from 2001 to 2012, featuring Shane Told (vocals), Neil Boshart (guitar), Josh Bradford (guitar), Billy Hamilton (bass) and Paul Koehler (drums). In September 2012, Neil Boshart was fired because the band felt he was not contributing his share and would be replaced by Paul Marc Rousseau, who also joined Hamilton on backing vocals.

After the release of their debut When Broken Is Easily Fixed (2003), the band achieved moderate success with their second studio album, Discovering the Waterfront (2005), which was nominated for a Juno Award and reached 34 on the Billboard 200 charts, with the following two albums, Arrivals & Departures (2007) and A Shipwreck in the Sand (2009), charting at similar positions. These releases were followed-up with: Rescue (2011), Short Songs (2012) and This Is How the Wind Shifts (2013).

In 2010, the act left long-time record label, 'Victory Records' and, after a period with 'Hopeless Records', are currently signed to 'Rise Records'. They released their 8th studio album, I Am Alive in Everything I Touch in 2015. In total Silverstein has sold over 1 million albums worldwide thus far.
