Biography

Unexpect (1996-2015): a Black Metal band from Montreal, Québec, Canada.

ixing everything from progressive metal, black metal and Death metal, UnexpecT produced ambient sound and even circus music to create a style they dubbed as a "Metal Laboratory" that innovated according to the human shifting mood. Featuring 7 beings who, in their own words were/are a bunch of "daydreamers and lunar people" attempting to, "travel in their art, related to the imagination and the inherent creative power of all human beings, subjective faraway fantasy tales, trance like sensory exploration, undercover denunciation of social aspects and subconscious realities. Soul-travel being one of the prime reasons of music's existence; they give attention to the individuality and personality of each song,to better sail these multiple emotional states of ours. Different destinations breathing on the same vessel. A torrent of diverse feelings, UnexpecT is a band fitting as much for an energetic-frenzied-slam-in-a-sweaty-infernal-pit-oozing-impure-pagan-blood session than for a lazily-sitting-on-a-water-cloud-smelling-astral-fruits-to-hypnose-an-elf-with-a-pretty-ladie's-finger-in-your-ass moment."

In 1996 Stéphane "Artagoth" English (guitar) and Mathieu "Zircon" Phaneuf (bass) played together as a thrash metal act with young unknown musicians. The band was then called Unexpected and was influenced by American bands like Metallica, Death, Slayer and Megadeth. By the end of the year, Eryk "Syriak" Chapados and a drummer Ben Gélinas joined the ranks. It was in this period that the band's name became UnexpecT by deforming the original word to nullify the original meaning while keeping the succession of letters. By then end of 1997 the drummer was fired due to personal divergences so Lunorin, an old time friend of Syriak Chapados, joined. The old material created to this point was almost completely scraped as the band reshaped old songs and composed new material in the European vein with their new influences of bands At the Gates, In Flames, Moonspell, Dissection and Dark Tranquillity. It was soon after discovered that having only four in the membership, and believing their music lacked texture, they recruited two other childhood friends of Syriak and Lunorin in the form of: Olivier "Merzenya" Genest (keyboards) and Charles "Le Bateleur" Crépeau (violin); another acquaintance, Véronique "Elda" Michaud (Female vocals), later joined.

UnexpecT finally entered studio for the first time in the summer of 1998 with their debut album Utopia (1999) resulting, the album made it to far flung places like Philippines, Brazil and Russia without distribution (except for their website). But the experimenting didn't last long for Zircon, Elda and Olivier "Merzenya" Genest quietly left UnexpecT for personal reasons in 2001. In this time of metamorphosis, Lunorin shape changed (renamed) into Stéphane "ExoD" Primeau and became the new keyboardist. Frédérick "ChaotH" Filiatrault took the bass position, the sweet dancing maiden with an aerial voice going under the name of Roxanne "Leïlindel" Hegyesy came in, and Landryx entered the UnexpecT cast to fill the drum position. After their _wE, Invaders EP (2003) on 'Galy Records', they would change their label in preparation for a new release on 'The End Records' with the line-up of in the form of SyriaK(vocals), ExoD (piano), Artagoth (guitar/vocals), Le bateleur (violin), ChaotH (bass), Leïlindel (dancing/vocals) and Landryx (drums).

In a Flesh Aquarium would arrive in 2006, but without a label, Fables of the Sleepless Empire (2011) would be self-released with the line-up of Eryk "Syriak" Chapados (vocals/guitar), Stéphane "Artagoth" English (vocals/guitar), Roxanne "Leïlindel" Hegyesy (vocals), Frédérick "ChaotH" Filiatrault (bass), Landryx (drums) and new member Blaise Borboën-Léonard (violin). The band broke up in 2015.
