Poverty

Biography

Poverty (1988-1998, 2001-present): a Death Metal band from San Francisco, California, USA.

E

xtreme death metal band Poverty was formed in 1989 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Scott Dodge (guitar), Lou Gilberto (bass), and two former members of Infernal Forces, Rob Blasini (drums) and Willie Najera (vocals) to release their debut demo tape, Poverty Portrays Truth (1989).

After a couple of demo tapes, and several successful shows in the bay area, Poverty changed its line-up in 1991 with the addition of ex-Insanity drummer Buddy Mills. The band now consisted of Dodge, Gilberto and Mills, a line up which held for a long time. With the addition of Bud Mills to the act, the entire band improved to a more vicious and faster attack, which was the goal from the start. After playing years of shows and parties, they finally released an 8 song demo entitled Poverty Sucks in 1998. After its release, the band was put on hold for a few years only to eventually have the entire line-up of Poverty became folded into the death metal/thrash metal band Insanity. After recording one acclaimed album with that act, the show was again brought to a halt due to a member's emotional problems. So, the remaining members left to reform Poverty in 2001 with their 2003 EP, Global Destruction, featuring Sean Riggen on vocals resulting soon after. Although still listed as active, the act has been silent since.
